Top 5 Non Meat Protein

I am a carnivore. Period.

I know and understand the awesome benefits of a meat free lifestyle, but I just can't roll that way! That being said, whenever possible I source my meat from local, organic, grass fed sources, that give their animals a lovely life first. Yes, I do care about that! I am VERY passionate about sustainable organic farming but don't even get me started, because that's not what this is about today.

The thing is, there are some pretty awesome protein sources that are NOT animal based! In fact, there is a ton of underrated vegan protein sources!

In our online health and fitness bootcamp groups we get a variety of people looking for nutritional support, so of course they have a variety of food preferences! I like to make sure everyone's needs are met, because let's face it, who doesn't want results?! AND who doesn't want to actually ENJOY what their eating!?

The thing is, protein is critical for building and maintaining muscle! It is also essential just for maintaining a healthy balanced diet. So getting enough protein in your daily regime is important!

Rounding out your diet matters too, so you get a variety of nutrients, and it's nice to have a variety of flavours too!

My top 5, favourite meat free protein sources are:

1. Brussel sprouts - yup, these little suckers provide 3 grams of protein (8% of our daily recommended intake) in 1 cup. Plus they are power packed with vitamin C too! Bonus! We love ours roasted with a little coconut oil and sea salt & pepper.

2. Spirulina - Spirulina contains about 5x the amount of protein than other foods. It also contains about 50-70% protein - beef for example is around 22 %. But make sure you get yours from a reputable source!

3. Nuts - my fave nuts are almonds. There is about 5.5 g of protein in a serving of 22. Makes a great snack! Plus almonds are high in vitamin and Manganese. BOOM!
4. Lentils - on average a cup contains about 15 grams of protein. They are a slow burning protein so they make you feel full longer!

5. Quinoa - What is so cool about this delicious plant-based proteins stores that it is a complete protein source.! It's provides all the essential amino acids! A one cup serving clocks in around 8g of protein.

So if you need a break from meat, or just want to add some variety to your diet, try out one of these awesome protein sources this weekend!
